Ransomware is a type of malware used for data kidnapping. The attacker encrypts the victim's data and demands payment for the decryption key. The latest is the Cerber3 ransomware which encrypts the victim's files by turning them into .cerber3 file extensions. Once this encryption is done, a ransome note will be left on the victim's computer screen stating the steps you'll take to decrypt your files in exchange for a given amount of that must be paid within a certain number of days. This money(ransom) is requested in bitcoins - a cryptocurrency.
